Marriage Counseling
A good marriage doesn’t have to wait for a crisis. Maybe you feel distant since having kids, keep having the same argument, or carry resentment over an unequal load. Maybe in-law tension, a lost sense of intimacy, or a betrayal has made it hard to trust each other again. Marriage counseling gives you a safe, nonjudgmental space to understand what’s happening between you and learn practical skills to change it. Whether you’ve been married six months or twenty years, or you’re not sure whether to repair or separate, we’ll help you gain clarity and move forward with intention.
At Oak and Stone Therapy, our marriage counselors in Pasadena, Highland Park, and our Los Angeles office in Koreatown, as well as online in California and Washington, help married couples have the conversations that lead to real change. Our approach draws on Restoration Therapy and somatic Brainspotting, and we offer support in English and Korean. If you’re also exploring dating, engaged, or non-married relationships, see our couples therapy in Pasadena & Los Angeles page.
Our marriage Therapists and Counselors help you and your partner:
Rebuild trust and emotional intimacy after betrayal, distance, or years of unresolved hurt
Understand the patterns you fall into together that keep you stuck, and learn how to break them
See how your family history and past experiences shape the way you show up in your marriage
Resolve misunderstandings, reduce conflict, and learn your triggers so arguments lead to closeness instead of distance
Bridge cultural, language, or family-background differences, including intercultural and interracial marriages
Break out of the roommate feeling and rebuild friendship, fun, and connection in a long-term marriage
Improve communication, especially when conversations turn into the same fight or shut down entirely
Reconnect physically and emotionally when desire, intimacy, or romance has faded
Navigate in-law and extended family tension, and set healthy boundaries together
Adjust to life transitions such as becoming parents, marriage after kids, a career change, caring for aging parents, separation, or reconciliation
Heal from infidelity or betrayal and decide together how to move forward
Share the mental load, household responsibilities, and parenting more fairly
Work through money stress, differing spending habits, and financial decisions as a team
Navigate ADHD, burnout, or high-pressure careers that leave little energy for each other
Bridge cultural, language, or family-background differences, including intercultural and interracial marriages
*Offerings also include pre-marital therapy, discernment counseling, and parenting support.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
No. We see married couples at every stage, from newlyweds to couples married twenty years or more. Some come with a specific hurt, and others feel more like roommates than partners. If you’re unsure whether to stay together, our discernment counseling is designed for that. If you’re dating or engaged, see our couples therapy in Pasadena & Los Angeles page.
-
Yes, we support couples through the aftermath of an affair or betrayal. Counseling gives both of you a structured, safe space to talk about what happened, understand what led up to it, and work through hurt and rebuilding trust at a pace you can both manage. Some couples choose to repair the marriage and some decide to separate. Our role is to help you make that decision with clarity, not to push you toward either outcome.
-
Many couples seek us out after a baby or during the busy years of raising kids. Sleep loss, an uneven mental load, and little time alone can slowly turn partners into co-managers. In sessions, we help you talk about who carries what, find ways to reconnect, and learn to handle stress together instead of taking it out on each other.
-
Yes. Conflict with parents or in-laws is one of the most common sources of marital stress, especially around boundaries, holidays, caregiving, and cultural expectations about family loyalty. We help you and your spouse get on the same page, set boundaries as a team, and speak up in ways that protect your marriage without cutting off family.
-
This is common in long-term marriages, and it’s rarely only about sex. Resentment, stress, hurt, and disconnection often show up as distance in the bedroom first. We help couples talk openly about closeness, desire, and what has changed. If you need specialized sex therapy, we’ll tell you and help you find the right referral.
-
Yes. If faith is important to you, we can talk about how your beliefs shape your marriage, including your values, expectations, and differences in how each of you practices faith. We also support couples whose experiences in church have affected their relationship. Learn more on our Christian counseling page or our religious trauma therapy page.
