How Pre-Marital Counseling and Couples Therapy Helps Los Angeles Couples Build Stronger Relationships
Marriage is an exciting new chapter, but navigating wedding planning and major life transitions can also bring unique expectations, choices, and stress. Whether you are living in Koreatown, Mid-City, Downtown LA (DTLA), Silverlake, Echo Park, Hollywood, or along the Wilshire corridor, couples across Los Angeles can benefit from setting aside dedicated time to prepare for married life together.
Premarital counseling at Oak and Stone Therapy at our Los Angeles office in Koreatown gives couples a supportive, structured space to strengthen their relationship. Working with an experienced Los Angeles couples therapist allows you and your partner to explore essential topics—such as family-of-origin expectations, socioeconomic differences, cultural and interracial couple dynamics, financial transparency, in-law boundaries, and healthy communication skills for long-term partnership.
Why Consider Premarital Counseling & Couples Therapy in Los Angeles?
Many of my couples seeking therapy in LA often tell me that they initially believed the common misconception that counseling is only for relationships in crisis. In reality, premarital counseling and proactive couples therapy are invaluable even when your relationship is already healthy and fulfilling.
The goal isn't to eliminate every disagreement. Healthy relationships involve differences—how you spend or save money, expectations on how to relate with in-laws, how much time is spent together and independently, who cooks and washes the dishes, who takes out the trash and vacuums, chores, how to vacation, how to parent the children, having kids or not having kids, how to approach and work through disagreement and misalignment in expectations. The goal in pre-marital therapy is to understand how to navigate the differences in your relationship and develop constructive ways to work through them together on topics such as communication, partnership, finances, intimacy, and family planning.
Does Couples Counseling Mean Something Is Wrong?
Not at all.
Many of my clients who come to me seeking couples therapy often do not come in reporting a troubled relationship. My couples often tell me that they are choosing pre-marital therapy because they want to be intentional about building a healthy foundation for a strong marriage.
Think of premarital counseling as an opportunity to strengthen the foundation you're already building together. You don't have to wait for a major problem before learning better communication and relationship skills.
When Should Couples Start Premarital Therapy?
There is no single “right” time to begin premarital therapy. Some of my couples in therapy start several months before their wedding, while others seek counseling earlier in their engagement or even before becoming engaged.
Starting early can give you and your partner more time to have meaningful conversations, practice new skills, and work through topics that may require additional attention before the busyness of wedding and engagement planning comes into consideration.
What Can You Expect From Premarital Counseling?
Pre-marital counseling sessions are often timebound to 6-10 sessions utilizing the Prepare/Enrich curriculum and integrating evidence-based therapy tools drawn from the Restoration Therapy approach, assessing your relationship, your history together, your strengths, and the areas you would like to explore and grow together in
Conversations often include guided conversations about finances, family planning, families of origin, expectations of marriage, relationship assessments, communication exercises, and opportunities to practice problem-solving skills, not just talk about them. The therapy process with me is collaborative, and my role as a counselor is not to take sides but to help you and your partner understand yourselves and each other more clearly.
Most importantly, in premarital counseling, I hope to provide a space where you and your partner can be honest, curious, and heard.

Marriage doesn't come with a universal instruction manual. You and your partner most likely bring different experiences, family backgrounds, expectations, cultures, strengths, habits, and challenges into a relationship.
Premarital counseling can help you and your partner slow down and have the conversations that matter before entering marriage. It offers an opportunity to build communication skills, clarify expectations, and develop a stronger understanding of one another.
